July 16, 2010: MARC - The Value of the Audit

Against a background of economic difficulty in Europe, unrest in the capital markets, widespread recession and the adoption of IFRSs by many countries, the value of audit comes into sharp focus. Maastricht Accounting, Auditing and Information Management Research Center (MARC), of Maastricht University, has conducted an international study on this subject, in which we investigated the value of audit from the perspective of three important European capital market stakeholders: (1) preparers of financial reports, (2) those charged with oversight of financial reporting and (3) users of financial reports.

June 2, 2010: Call for Nominations: IAAER Director of Research and Educational Activities

The International Association for Accounting Education and Research is seeking an individual to serve as Director of Research and Educational Activities (DREA).  The IAAER currently has research projects supporting the work of the International Accounting Standards Board, the International Accounting Education Standards Board, and the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board.  These projects are supported with grants from KPMG and ACCA.  In addition there are several educational projects partnering with the World Bank and others.  It is anticipated that the volume of both research and educational projects will grow.

April 25, 2010: DART – Doctoral Program in Accounting, Reporting, and Taxation

DART is a doctoral program in Accounting, Reporting, and Taxation with a comprehensive view of economics-based research and a strict focus on quantitative methods and modeling. It is located in Graz and Vienna, Austria, and is a joint initiative of the University of Graz, the University of Vienna, and the WU Vienna University of Economics and Business. The program is in English and covers all major fields of accounting: financial accounting, management accounting, auditing, taxation, and corporate governance. Students admitted to DART are required to enroll with the appropriate formal doctoral program at one of the three participating universities. DART scholarship holders are paid a salary (after taxes and social security payments) of approximately 18.000 Euros per year. Applications must be received by June 15, 2010. April 12, 2010: IAAER Announces Appointment of SAC Consult Committee

To provide a more formal process by which IAAER institutional members can express their views on international accounting standard setting, IAAER has established a SAC Consult Committee. The SAC serves an advisory role to the IASB giving input on the IASB's agenda and current issues in financial reporting. SAC representatives are asked to collect, synthesize, and communicate the ideas and concerns of their underlying organizations to the IASB during SAC meetings that are held at least three times a year.

April 11, 2010: Volunteers needed to develop questions on IFRS for Uniform CPA Examination

The AICPA Examinations Team is seeking professionals with solid skills and knowledge in International Financial Reporting Standards to develop questions ("items") on IFRS for the Uniform CPA Examination. To qualify, volunteers must have a current CPA license or comparable internationally recognized credential, a minimum of three years of experience as a licensed professional, and expertise in the application of IFRS. Volunteers may not be affiliated with any Uniform CPA Examination review course. Item Development Workshops conducted via Web conference (approx. 90 minutes) will provide instruction on item development. Volunteers then will submit a few items to AICPA Examinations Team staff for review and feedback, so that they can independently develop a minimum of 15 items in prescribed areas.

April 1, 2010: Key Research into Global Audit Issues is Announced: Informing the IAASB
Research into pressing global auditing issues has been commissioned by the International Association for Accounting Education and Research (IAAER) and funded by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). The program supports academic research directed at informing the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board's (IAASB) standard setting activities. Funded projects will be showcased at three events involving representatives from the IAASB as well as renowned researchers specializing in the area of audit and assurance. Funding for this program is provided by ACCA.

Call for IAAER Officer Nominations

The IAAER Nominations Committee is prepare a single slate of candidates for election as officers, to include the nominees for the Vice-Presidents at-Large who shall be provided from representatives of the Academic Accounting Associations giving regard to the size of the association membership and with due consideration to region and contribution to Association activities. The slate shall be presented at the general membership meeting held during the 2010 IAAER World Congress in Singapore and distributed to the general membership prior to the meeting at which the election is held.

International Accounting Standards Committee Foundation (IASC Foundation)
Academic Fellow, Education Initiative
To start January 1, 2011

The education team is seeking an Academic Fellow: Education Initiative who will fill a 1‑year term, with eligibility for renewal for a further year. It is envisaged that the post will be filled continuously by IFRS Academics on sabbatical leave from the universities. Exceptional candidates will also be considered to fill the post for a period of 6‑months.

Academic Fellows assist in delivering the Foundation’s education plan. To date, IFRSs have been adopted in over 100 countries, with many more countries planning conversion. Improving the global understanding of IFRSs is a critical goal of our organisation. This appointment presents an excellent opportunity to get involved in a broad range of initiatives that will support both the global understanding and reputation of IFRSs and the IFRS for SMEs.

New research in emerging economies to be encouraged by global partners
The IAAER (International Association of Accounting Education and Research) and ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) have signed a collaboration agreement to work together over the next three years to promote detailed research which will help to inform and influence the development of accounting and auditing standards.

Recipients of the IAAER/ACCA/IAESB Research Grants
A global invitation for research proposals to advance the field of accounting education was launched jointly by the International Association for Accounting Education and Research (IAAER) and ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).  Up to five research grants of $25,000, funded by ACCA, the world’s largest and fastest-growing global professional accountancy body, have been awarded under the programme, which aims to support the work of the International Accounting Education Standards Board (IAESB).
